Since 1932, all U.S. quarters have featured the same face on the front: George Washington, the first U.S. president. But each year from 2022 to 2025, there will be five new quarters honoring trailblazing women and their accomplishments on the back.

The nation’s coins are made by the U.S. Mint. Designers first create artwork for the coins. The Mint transforms the designs into 3-D computer models. These models are used to make devices that stamp the designs into metal discs. It takes up to 110 tons of pressure to make coins!

“I am so happy I can shine a light on their contributions,” says Emily Damstra, who designed the 2023 coin honoring Hawaiian composer Edith Kanakaʻole.
